Just a little bit... - H

Ahhh! I got sick the other day and lost my voice today. This has happened 2 or 3 times in the four years I've been teaching. I should take the hint and stop talking so much. =P Last year, I had completely lost my voice and couldn't even whisper, so I hooked up my laptop to the LCD projector. I typed my directions and lecture in realtime, and oddly enough the students thought it was cool. They probably learned the most that day b/c they all had to pay attention.

As a teacher sometimes I find it hard to break away from the tried and true lessons of the last four years and do something new. Why endure all that anxiety? Why put yourself in a position to face a failed lesson? Why put the extra time into planning a new activity when the old one works? Well, b/c once in a while it comes out well. It's even better than it was before, and the work was well worth the effort. A little bit of sacrifice for the greater blessing of having students who get the concepts and don't have to come to you the day before the test with a blank look on their face and say, "I don't get it." A little bit of sacrifice for the greater blessing of seeing students get a personal best score on the unit exam b/c they understand the stuff. A little bit of sacrifice for the greater blessing of seeing a mousey student raise his or her hand in class b/c he or she knows the answer to a question. It's just a little bit of sacrifice in the end although oftentimes it seems like a lot more.

All my life I've always heard other people say that what God has to offer is so much greater than what we could imagine. Admittedly, the good that He imagines is not necessarily the good that we might imagine, but it is always better. He might call us to a life that is difficult but offer us a deeper and more intimate relationship with Him. He might not grant us worldly riches, power, fame, status, but an opportunity to see what He's doing in the world and the chance to be in the front lines with Him as he advances His Kingdom. On a smaller scale, a little sacrifice of our time to spend a moment in prayer for a friend, to spend in the Word and to learn from Him, to invest in a relationship with another...maybe we'll get the chance to be used by Him and experience that joy. For me it's often such a huge sacrifice, but it seems that in retrospect, our ways and plans are always such a small sacrifice to lay on the alter for the huge blessings he has to offer. Still, though I know this in my head, applying it is much more difficult. I have to remind myself...baby steps.

I think I'm out of this funk that I've been in for the last 4 years. Hooray!
