My second love... - H

Gosh, I don't remember the last time I was this busy...well, actually it was two years ago, my first year teaching. So, I guess this isn't quite as bad as that, but taking this photo class, while I'm enjoying it, is tiring me out. E and I went to Stanford two nights ago to take some photos for my flash assignment. This is my least favorite assignment so far. I prefer to take photographs of what's already there rather than contriving a scene, which is what this assignment asks you to do. If I think about it more, I could probably just use the flash as a tool to highlight components of what's to be photographed. I'm starting to be able to visualize some of that, but I'm still not sure how to really use the flash to create interesting scenes. We'll see how these pictures turn out.

I'm also a bit stressed by the class b/c we have an assignment due every week, so that means shooting, developing the film, and printing the photo all in a week. To give you an idea, developing takes me about 40 minutes. Printing one photo takes me about 90 min. The lab session is only 3 hours, and they won't allow you to start something new less than 90 minutes before the lab session ends. Most people have signed up for additional lab hours. I didn't b/c I didn't think I'd have time to go, but I should have just made some time. Eventually, printing a photo should take about 15 minutes. Our instructor says, that if it takes you longer than 5 minutes to print a photo, you've lost money. It's all the decision making about which exposure looks best, whether you need to use special techniques or filters to make the print look better, etc. that takes time. I still have a lot to learn. I really love it though! Maybe I'll teach photography on the side while doing my own work one day.

I'm still trying to figure out what kind of photos I'd like to publish in my book. I'm not sure what the theme would be. I've thought about making "family" or "children" the theme of the book. With the idea of children...when I hear stories about children growing up in severly dysfunctional families, who have been victims of their environment, those in other countries who are recruited as soldiers at the age of 7, my heart really goes out to them. It seems so unjust. Why do children have to endure such horrible things and be placed in such circumstances? They have no control over this. So, I thought that perhaps the book could have something to do with that or with family. I connect having a strong family foundation with society's values, etc. So, I'd want to promote that somehow. We'll see. Maybe it'll simply show the wonders of God's beautiful creation??...or something else entirely.

Hm...some of the things I like taking pictures of...bare trees (as in the winter), macro shots (close-ups) of flowers, and I'm attracted to interesting angles in the landscape. I haven't taken any pictures of this, but I think that the human body is really beautiful - the body lines, the contours created by the muscles on the arms and legs. Dancers have really beautiful bodies.
