Improv - H
E and I got to see Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood, comedians from Whose Line is it Anyway? at the Flint Center in Cupertino last night. (Colin is my favorite of the improv comedians from Whose Line.) I LOVE COMEDY IMPROV! Very few things can eke out a sincere and hearty laugh from me, and good improv is one of them. The Whose Line crew doesn't tape the show anymore, but I guess they put on shows as Improv All-Stars across the country. I hope they come the the Bay Area sometime.
So the show last night was a sold out affair. It was great, with lots of laugh out loud moments. They use a lot of audience participation and after my 15 minutes of fame on stage with the Blue Men of Blue Man Group a couple of years ago, I wanted to make it up on stage again. No such luck.
The reason that improv is so funny to me is b/c it's not scripted. There's no sense that the comedians are really trying hard to make you laugh. All the dialogue is made up on the spot, and what happens next is completely unexpected. That's funny! So, from day to day, this is the only kind of thing that will make me laugh, and sometimes it's unfortunate. For example, when I was in college a few of us had just left a restaurant, and there was a kid with us. He was probably around 2 years old at the time. Well, he was distracted by something and wasn't looking ahead in the direction in which he was walking so he slapped himself into a fire hydrant and fell back on his butt, completely dumbfounded that he didn't even cry. You could almost see the stars circling his head. Of course I was concerned that he was hurt, but at the same time that was hilarious! It can look like I'm laughing at a person's pain and misery, but I'm really laughing at the sudden, the unexpected moment.
In other news, I found a new favorite place in our apartment. The balcony. We decided to buy some plants (fiery orange and red calla lilies, and some edibles) to create our own little potted garden. It's amazing what a few plants can do to the appearance of the place and to your mood when your eyes fall on them. It makes me feel fresh and happy every time. I think nature does that to me generally. So on a sunny day, I'll put a blanket out and just sit next to them. Sometimes I'll grade or read, and other times I'll just sit and enjoy.
It's been a relaxing and productive week. I'd say, the best break I've had in a while. Back to work!
