Phew... - H
Well, in case you were wondering, I got my photo assignment done with time to spare. I had a few shots come out, which is a relief. Otherwise, I would have had to shoot another roll of film, and let me tell you, flash photography just isn't up my alley. Photographers will say that you usually get only a few good (printworthy??) shots per roll of film. That's been true for me so far.
I realized today that in addition to taking photographs, I like to process my own film and make my own prints. Some photographers focus their efforts on taking photographs and don't worry about the processing. I'd like to hone my skills in all areas, and I can't wait to have my own darkroom one day. Although there's some creativity and skill involved in composing a great shot with the camera, there's a lot more power to manipulate that shot in the darkroom. Knowing your medium, and how to manipulate the camera to correctly expose the film, using all the resources available in the darkroom to achieve the desire effect and see your vision come to life AND knowing that you created it - that's really exciting. Simply seeing well exposed negatives after spending a half hour developing your film is exciting for me. I wait in anticipation to see what it was that I caught on film, to see my ideas come to life. It's amazing to me.
In other news...Lately, I've been feeling frustrated by the real estate market in the Bay area. I'm thinking about it b/c my sister just bought a place in Philly, a 4 bedroom townhouse that's fairly old but in good condition from what I understand for $240k...which was below the asking price, I might add. Now, in the Bay area that would cost at least twice as much if not more, and sellers often get more than what they ask for. Is that not outrageous?!
Well, not that I want to move right now. I really love our apartment, and it's slowly getting homier. We just got some bedside table lamps which completely change the feel of the room, adding softer light and balance. The room also looks established, not as though we're in transition, if you know what I mean. It's amazing what a difference such a slight change can make. I need to work on the living room and wall hangings for the entire apartment. I have a few ideas, but nothing really inspired. It'll all come together eventually. It's just a matter of time.

this entry reminds me of the time i made a pinhole camera in summer school after 5th grade. i took a photography class for kids and we made these cameras out of quaker oats cannisters, composed the shot, and developed the film. that was the coolest and most accomplished thing with photography i have ever done, even now. i probably already shared that story with you. sorry. it's the only point of reference for photography i have :).
you know, regarding interior design (i'm sidestepping the overpriced housing market in the bay issue <- redundant), i've been thinking a lot that lighting is everything. i've been to a couple posh condos in downtown chicago now, but none of them had good lighting, and it just made the place feel "not as nice." not to mention it was annoying trying to read a book in these places because of that fact. i just think good lighting makes or breaks a room. all that to say bravo and congrats on your new table lamps.
Hm...I think you're on the nose with the lighting thing. I think I'm going to look for some floor lamps for the living room and see how that transforms the room. Thanks for the tip!
