Christmas with the family - H

My parents enjoyed getting together with all of their daughters, their daughters' husbands, and their granddaughters for Christmas. I planned sort of a destination Christmas in Virginia where my big sis lives. It's the first time in years that we've spent the holidays all together as far as I can remember. It was really nice to spend time talking and catching up at least a little bit with what's going on with my family. We're not ones to really keep in touch. I especially loved hanging out with my nieces who are now 12, 9, and 6 years old. E and I are easily their favorite aunt and uncle. We're young and fun. How can you beat that?!

Our family also doesn't usually exchange presents. If anything we just exchange money, which I don't really like b/c it's too easy and lacks thoughtfulness. E and I spent a fair amount of time shopping for gifts for each of our family members and just had a great time of it. The best part is when they open it and are excited about what they got. That was the most fun for me. Maybe it's b/c Christmas shopping is kind of a new thing for me, but I really like it...especially shopping for kids.

Hanging out with my nieces and also a friend of ours that just had a baby two months ago made me want to have one...BUT still not for a little while. Kids are so much fun to be around, and they bring a kind of joy that nothing else can bring. It's really a cool feeling.

My big sis was talking to me about when I have kids and encouraging me to go back to work when the kids are old enough. If I can have a job that let's me be home when my kids are home, sure, but I think I'd like to be home for longer than just the first five years. Hanging out with my nieces, I realized that even the oldest one still has a lot to learn from her parents, from things like learning how to cook and other life skills, to how to be more diplomatic when dealing with conflict with her sisters and how to help resolve conflict. The less time the parents have to spend with their kids, the less their influence on them.

The other thing I realized is that I'm ready for a career change sometime in the next few years. I've just concluded that but have made no plans. I don't even know what exactly I want to go into or what the next steps are, but I think I'm ready for a change. I know that I want to use my administrative skills and be in an environment where I can be creative...something like event/wedding planning or interior design? Those are also flexible enough that I can more or less determine my own hours...I think. Again, like the photography thing, we'll see what happens.

Happy new year!
