Ah, pizza the way it's supposed to be - H
E and I just had Patxi's Chicago Pizza for the second time. We were first introduced to it by D & J sr. I have to say that it's the most authentic Chicago style, deep dish pizza this side of the Mississippi, and my current favorite pizza restaurant on the West Coast. I don't think I realized how much I missed authentic Chicago style pizza until I had Patxi's for the first time, which was a little while ago. I don't think I've had it in Chicago either in the last few years. We usually reserve our time and tummies for Potbelly sandwiches, Portillo's Italian beef and Chicago style hotdogs, and Barnelli's chopped salad. Mmm...my mouth is watering just thinking about it.
On top of good pizza, they had great, friendly service. There were so many people waiting for a table and even seated and waiting for their food (b/c deep dish pizza takes about 30 minutes to bake) so they came out with free slices of Italian style thin crust pizza for us who were waiting. Wonderful! If I ever eat thin crust pizza, that's exactly the kind of thin crust I like! Truly, the best of both worlds! Definitely a place that I'll go back to...and probably the only pizza that I'll order if it's up to me.
Criticisms?...Well, the crust is a little bready and crispy rather than flakey and doughy, if that makes sense, and it's a little salty for me. Otherwise. I don't have any complaints. I really like the sauce too! It's a place worth checking out if you're looking for a glimpse of real Chicago style pizza. (Pizza Chicago, by the way, is not Chicago style.)
What's great about deep dish pizza is that it's great for leftovers in the morning, which is what I had for breakfast - 2 slices of spinach, just like I used to when I was growing up. YUM!
