The rising cost of ... corn? - H

I haven't paid attention to this, but according to the news, the cost of groceries has risen in recent months, 4-6%. Guess what's causing it! The rising cost of corn. The increased interest in corn as a source of ethanol is driving up demand for corn, and since corn is soooo ubiquitous, present in most processed foods in one form or another, used for cattle feed, chicken feed, etc. it's driving up the cost of groceries. Of course the rising cost of fuel is also having an effect too b/c of the use of petroleum based fertilizers for crops, the cost of transporting the products, etc., but I was interested in just how directly connected to corn we are, which is what I've been reading about in Omnivore's Dilemma. Corn in our soda, corn in our meat, corn in our candy. You name it, there's probably some corn derivative in it. Corn, corn everywhere.
