Photography reflections - H
I'm beginning to think that in order to call myself a photographer, I just need to be practicing, actively taking photographs and making it part of my life. Maybe others need to recognize your work and talent too, and until then photography is just a hobby of yours, but doesn't have a significant place in defining you.
I'm trying to understand what makes a photograph/photographer noteworthy. I need to understand/have?? a purpose for every shot that I take. Otherwise I'm just aimless and taking photographs for no other reason than to do an assignment. What do I want from a photograph? What am I trying to do? I don't know how to figure that out yet. I feel lost. Hm...well, I have to write a paper about my visit to a photography exhibit. Maybe I'll find some answers there.

hi hanah!
i think a photographer or any artist for that matter should be first and foremost motivated by a personal desire to express oneself and not by a desire to become "noteworthy". perhaps you should learn techniques and study famous photographers to get ideas and learn about framing, lighting, f-stops, etc., but i think *you* and only you know what makes a good photograph for yourself. if other people understand that, that's just gravy. my opinion.

Dave Hong!!! Good to hear from you! Well, I think that there is probably some standard by which photographs can be called objectively good. I'd like to know what that is, and I guess that's what I meant by "noteworthy." Maybe I'm wrong though, and the most important thing is for me to do work that I like to do, but I can say that since I'm still in the early learning stages, that I do need to get better. Then, this points again to an idea that there's some level of "good" that one can get to. I'd like to take objectively good photographs.
I do think that after starting to think about this a bit more that I don't feel satisfied with my photographs anymore, whether they're snapshots or ones I'm taking to be more "artsy." I hope this isn't a permanent dissatisfaction. =)
How are you, Dave?!!!
