Stories - H

At around 8AM this morning, we heard some faint babbling coming from Baby J's room, so E got up to get her. He usually gets her in the morning and brings her to our room and we spend our morning half asleep while she's crawling all over us...although she's not really crawling, but I don't know what to call what she does. Anyway, this morning, E goes to her room, opens the door, and the next thing I hear is, "Oh my gosh, H, you have to see this!" I rush over to see what it was, and there was Baby J, with a big smile, standing in her crib with one hand on the rail and the other hand up as if she were waving.

J skipped her morning nap today. I realize patience is key when trying to put her to sleep. If I put her down too early, she wakes up and then wails in protest. She's wide awake then and doesn't go back to sleep. After 3 attempts, I gave up and took her to the living room while I went to the kitchen to do some dishes. Well, she didn't stay put for long, and after examining the microwave (ours is on the floor b/c we lack counter space), running into some remnants of last night's dinner, and flinging the empty milk jug across the floor, she found me at the kitchen sink, dragging her chubby belly all the way. So there she was, at my feet and after about a minute she started shouting, "Ehhhhh!" in a very forceful and distressed tone. I guess she lost interest in the milk jug, so I nudged it away from her so she could go and get it, but to no avail. She kept shouting. Finally, J realized that her shouting wasn't getting her what she wanted so she inched closer, hugged my leg, and started licking my pants. She was hungry.

I had this idea that since babies have virgin palates that they would like eating anything since everything is new and interesting. I don't know where I got that idea, but J doesn't like brocoli nor does she like this radish common to Korean cuisine (mooh). I made clear beef soup with radish and fed her the radish. She didn't like it. She'll eat the first piece to taste it, and then if you try to give it to her again, she sits back in her chair, purses her lips, and then just stares at the spoon as if to say, "You're not putting that in my mouth."

Gosh, just thinking about her makes me smile. She's in bed sleeping right now. I wish I could give her just one more hug today, but I'll have to wait until tomorrow.
