Hunger - H
So, I'm wondering these days about my old church and how a culture of prayer and being in the Word was built. People were so hungry to grow. I haven't been in such an environment since, and I understand why many don't want to leave when they graduate. I wasn't there since the church's inception, so I don't really know, but I definitely think it has to do with prayer among other things. Everyone prayed about everything. Even the team of people that volunteered to set up the chairs every week for several hundred people, they prayed for their ministry every week before starting. Nothing was too small. Everything was seen as ministry, and therefore depending on God was crucial.
I don't know what else. I think it would have to do with people being grounded in the Word, studying it on their own, and hungry to know how to glean insight from it. It's true that many had misconceptions about what it means to live as a follower, and in their immaturity applied it incorrectly, and imposed it on others that way, but regardless they were hungry. If God looks at the heart of his children, He would have been pleased.
I wonder if that hunger has remained, if all that training has stood the test of time in the lives of the people that came out of that church. I'm guessing not for all but for many, and that's cool. I think God is rekindling some of that hunger in my heart these days, and that feels good.
